Update: I voted in the NY Presidential Primary!

You can find the recap of my registration fiasco here.

On Tuesday I went in to the county BOE to present my case to a judge, who (much to my surprise) quickly ruled in my favor and signed a court order permitting me to vote in Tuesday’s primary.

Now, my situation was somewhat unique, but there were at least 4 other people waiting to see the judge alongside me, and each of them came out of the judge’s office smiling. I spoke to them a little bit while they waited – some had just barely missed the deadline to change addresses, etc. etc. Seemed like mostly clerical stuff, but the judge was very sympathetic and said she wanted to make sure as many people voted as was legally possible.

I did have one last hiccup at my polling place – the poll workers had never seen a court order like mine before and it took them a while to figure out how to handle it. I was also under the impression that I would vote via machine as usual (I was told this by a notary, not necessarily the judge directly), but after some more back and forth with the county I was told I would have to vote via affidavit ballot, but that my court order would be affixed to the outside of the envelope.

All told, it probably took me ~3 hours or more to vote in the primary on Tuesday. And it would have been a lot worse if I didn’t live so close to the county seat. If I had a normal work schedule (I currently work part-time in the afternoons/evenings), I don’t think it would have been possible for me to vote in this election.

After posting this update to Reddit I became a little nervous regarding the status of my affidavit ballot (and also convinced that I was in fact entitled to vote by regular ballot), but on Thursday I received my new voter registration card in the mail. I am officially registered as a Democrat in New York, backdated to March 18th. Hopefully there won’t be any lingering issues when I go to vote in the Congressional primary coming up in a few months!
